Queen West Bookstores and Arts Spaces: Type Books vs. Hopeless Romantic vs. Youngplace

Type Books, Hopeless Romantic Books and Artscape Youngplace compared: three Queen West stops for readers and art lovers, and how to pick the right one.

Queen West Bookstores and Arts Spaces: Type Books vs. Hopeless Romantic vs. Youngplace Queen West

Queen West is known for bars and boutiques, but its bookshops and arts spaces make a good afternoon on their own. Three stops stand out in recent coverage: Type Books, Hopeless Romantic Books and Artscape Youngplace.

Type Books: The Neighbourhood Standby

Type Books at 883 Queen Street West sits across from Trinity Bellwoods Park and also has a second shop at 427 Spadina Road in Forest Hill Village. It's an independent, community-focused bookstore with a general-interest selection: contemporary fiction, small press, art, design and children's titles. It hosts frequent author events and launches, runs a popular preschool storytime, and is known for its window displays. The Globe and Mail called it "a brilliant little chocolate box for bibliophiles."

Hopeless Romantic Books: A Romance-Only Specialist

At 1080 Queen Street West, Hopeless Romantic Books is a romance-only shop co-founded by sisters Kearston Bergeron and Serena Goodchild, covered by BlogTO in February 2026. The pink interior draws on Barbie and Y2K aesthetics, a "spice wall" rates books from one to five chili peppers by heat level, a "blind date" section offers wrapped books described only by plot and spice level, and a hidden room has a popcorn machine and TV. The rule: books must end in a happily ever after.

Artscape Youngplace: Galleries in a Former School

Youngplace, at 180 Shaw Street, occupies a former schoolhouse. Per Doors Open Ontario, it offers artists' studios, free public art galleries, a public lounge and cafe, and a material exchange, plus guided and self-guided tours; it's fully wheelchair accessible. A 2014 BlogTO tour noted the Koffler Gallery on the ground floor, along with tenants like Paperhouse Studio and Bellwoods Academy of Music. Tenants and exhibitions change, so check current listings before you go.

How to Choose

Go to Type Books for a broad, browsable selection and events. Go to Hopeless Romantic if you read romance or want a playful gift. Go to Youngplace for free galleries and a chance to see working studios. They're close enough to link together: Streets of Toronto's August 2026 Queen West guide also lists all three alongside Graffiti Alley and Trinity Bellwoods Park for a fuller route.
